How a walk-in shower kit actually goes in
The whole method, honestly: what the eight stages are, what each one costs in hours, which parts a competent DIYer can do, and the exact points where people get it wrong. We would rather you succeed than buy blind.

The short answer
A straight swap — same footprint, same drain location, no structural change — is a two-day job for a professional and a long weekend for a competent DIYer. Day one is demolition, inspection and rough-in. Day two is setting the pan, hanging the walls, fitting the valve and trim, and sealing.
Our pans arrive pre-leveled and self-sustaining. That means no mortar bed under the pan, which removes a full stage of work and the most common cause of a shower failing five years later. It also means the floor underneath has to be flat, because there is no mud to make up the difference.
The part most guides skip: almost every failed install traces back to one of three things. The pan was not level in both directions. The drain did not line up and got forced. Or somebody used latex or acrylic caulk where 100% silicone belongs, and it let go within two years.
You can do the demo, the pan set, the wall panels and the sealing yourself. Moving a drain line, altering framing or recessing a pan into the floor is where most people should stop and hire a licensed plumber.

It weighs drain relocation, floor construction, threshold height, demolition difficulty and plumbing experience — the five things that most often turn a straightforward kit install into an expensive one. Before you start
Four things to establish before anything comes off the wall.
Every expensive surprise on a shower install is something that could have been discovered in twenty minutes with a tape measure and a torch. Do these four and the rest of the job is largely predictable.

First
Measure the opening three times, at three heights
Measure the width at the floor, at waist height and at the ceiling, then take the smallest number. Walls are rarely parallel, especially in older houses, and a kit sized to the widest measurement will not go in. Do the same for depth. Give us the smallest figure in each direction, not the one you like best.

Second
Measure the delivery route, not just the bathroom
Find the narrowest point between the front door and the bathroom — usually a stair turn, a hall doorway or a banister. Multi-piece kits break down to pass a standard 32″ door and turn corners; a split backwall clears openings a full sheet will not. Single-piece units need a clear straight path, which is why they generally suit new construction and gut renovations.

Find the drain and work out what it is
Note whether it sits centre, left or right, and how far it is from each wall. Tub drains sit at one end rather than the centre, which is the single most common surprise in a tub-to-shower conversion. Look underneath if you can: cast iron, ABS and PVC all connect differently, and a plumber will want to know before quoting.

Establish what the floor is made of
Timber joists with a crawlspace or basement below is the easy case. Timber with a finished ceiling underneath is workable but messier. A concrete slab is the hard case, because anything requiring recessing means cutting concrete. Check the floor for level and for flex while you are down there.
The one call that saves the most money

Plumbing code
Two model codes. Two different minimum shower sizes.
This catches people out constantly, because most of the internet quotes one number as if it were universal. It is not. Which model code your jurisdiction adopted decides whether a given footprint is legal where you live.

Why this matters for your order
Kit sizes are quoted as nominal outside dimensions. The code measures the finished interior. Those are not the same number, and the gap is what decides whether a shallow footprint passes. If you are anywhere near the minimum — a 60×29 or 54×30 in particular — ask us for the clear interior dimension of that exact model before you order, and check it against your local code.
Two more numbers to know
A shower drain is 2″ minimum. And an accessible shower spray unit has to deliver water at 120°F maximum under the ADA, which in practice means a thermostatic or pressure-balancing valve rather than a plain mixer. Both are cheap to get right at rough-in and expensive to retrofit.
Rough-in
The dimensions your plumber will ask for.
Rough-in is the stage where mistakes become permanent. These are the working numbers for a typical kit install — always check them against the spec sheet for your exact model, which we will send you.
Typical rough-in elevation
Heights measured from the finished shower floor, not the subfloor.
Working figures for a standard kit. The 33″–36″ band is the ADA grab bar height range under §609; our wall panels carry reinforced backing throughout, so on our kits you are not limited to that band. The 17″–19″ seat height and the 38″–48″ valve position are the ADA transfer-shower figures. Always defer to the spec sheet for your model.
Blocking
If you are fitting anything other than our reinforced-backing panels, add solid blocking between studs anywhere a grab bar or seat will land. Retrofitting blocking after the walls are up means opening them again.
Wall flatness
Panels telegraph what is behind them. Check the studs with a long straightedge and shim or plane anything proud before the panels go on, or you will see it in the finished surface.
Subfloor
Because the pan is pre-leveled and self-sustaining, the subfloor under it must be flat, sound and dry. Sister any springy joists and replace any water-damaged decking now, not later.
Kit list
What you need on the bench.
Nothing exotic. The two items people forget are a genuinely long level and the right sealant, and both of those are the ones that matter most.
Tools
- A 4′ level. Not a torpedo level, not a phone app. This is the single most important tool in the job.
- Tape measure, chalk line, framing square
- Stud finder and a pencil
- Drill/driver with a hole saw set for the valve and shower arm
- Jigsaw or oscillating multi-tool for panel cut-outs
- Caulk gun — a decent dripless one
- Pry bar, reciprocating saw, utility knife for demo
- Shop vacuum, dust sheets, eye and ear protection, gloves
Materials
- 100% silicone sealant. Not latex, not siliconised acrylic, not "tub and tile" unless the tube says 100% silicone. Colour-matched to the pan.
- The adhesive specified for your panel system. Use what the instructions call for — the wrong adhesive can attack the panel.
- Corrosion-resistant screws for the pan and panel flanges
- Shims — composite, not timber
- The drain assembly supplied with the pan. Our no-caulk drain is included.
- Plumber's putty or the gasket kit per the drain instructions
- Backer board or moisture-resistant board if you are replacing damaged substrate
- Blocking timber if your walls are not pre-reinforced
The sealant rule, stated once and plainly
Use 100% silicone everywhere water can reach. Latex and siliconised acrylic caulks are easier to tool and easier to paint, and they are also the reason a large share of showers start leaking at the pan-to-wall joint within two years. They shrink, they lose adhesion on gelcoat, and they support mould. There is no cost saving worth this. Check the tube.
The method
Eight stages, in order.
This is a real sequence, so the numbering carries information: each stage depends on the one before it being finished properly. The most common way an install goes wrong is somebody running two stages in parallel to save an afternoon.

Stage 1 · 2–5 hours
Shut off, protect, demolish
Water off at the fixture stops or the main. Protect the route out with dust sheets and cardboard, and put a fan in a window. Take out the old unit in the reverse order it went in: trim, then walls, then the tub or base. A cast iron tub is heavy enough to be dangerous on stairs — the usual approach is to break it up in place with a sledge under a moving blanket, wearing eye protection. Cut fasteners rather than tearing at flanges; you want the studs intact.

Stage 2 · 1 hour
Inspect what you have uncovered
This is the stage everybody skips, and it is the one that decides whether the job stays on budget. Look for rot in the sill plate and bottom of the studs, mould behind the old surround, soft subfloor near the drain, and any framing that is out of plumb. Fix all of it now. Every hour spent here is worth three later. If you find something structural, stop and get a professional opinion before you go further.

Stage 3 · 2–6 hours
Rough-in the plumbing
Set the mixing valve at the height you want it, allowing for the finished wall thickness. Set the shower arm. Confirm the drain is a 2″ line, properly trapped and vented, and that it lands where the new pan expects it. Dry-fit the pan first and mark the drain position on the subfloor — do not trust the drawing. If the drain has to move more than an inch or two, this is licensed plumber territory in most jurisdictions.

Stage 4 · 2–4 hours
Set the pan
Because our pans are pre-leveled and self-sustaining, there is no mortar bed. Set the pan dry, connect the drain per its instructions, then level it in both directions and shim as needed. Check level along the front edge, along the back edge, and across both diagonals. Then check it again with somebody standing in it. Fasten through the flange into the studs with corrosion-resistant screws — snug, not crushed. Fill the pan with a couple of inches of water and leave it while you have lunch: if the level has moved or the drain weeps, you find out now rather than after the walls are on.

Stage 5 · 3–5 hours
Hang the wall panels
Back wall first, then the side walls, so the side panels overlap the back panel and shed water into the pan rather than behind it. Dry-fit every panel before any adhesive goes on. Mark and cut the valve and shower arm holes from the finished face using a hole saw, cutting slightly oversized so the escutcheon covers the edge and the panel is not stressed. Apply adhesive as specified, press out from the centre, and support the top edge until it grabs.

Stage 6 · 1–3 hours
Fit the valve trim, fixtures and accessories
Trim plate and handle, shower arm and head, glide bar and handheld, grab bars, fold-down seat, curtain rod or door. With our reinforced backing the grab bars go where the person needs them; hold each one in position and have the actual user try it before you drill. Sit on the seat. Reach the valve from the seat. Adjust before anything is permanent.

Stage 7 · 1 hour
Seal every joint
Mask both sides of each joint, run a continuous bead of 100% silicone, tool it once with a wet finger or a proper tool, and pull the tape immediately while the silicone is wet. Seal the pan-to-wall joint, the vertical corners, around the drain flange per the instructions, and around every penetration. One continuous pass beats three touch-ups.

Stage 8 · 24 hours
Cure, then test
Silicone needs roughly 24 hours before the shower is used. Resist. Then run the shower hot for ten minutes with the door or curtain closed and check every joint, the drain connection, and the ceiling below if there is one. Check again after a week of normal use. A leak found in week one is a bead of silicone; a leak found in year two is a floor.
The stage you cannot rush
Stage 4. A pan that is out of level by an eighth of an inch across five feet will pond water at one corner for the next thirty years, and no amount of sealant fixes it. It is twenty minutes of extra checking against a problem that cannot be corrected later without pulling the walls off.
The stage everyone skips
Stage 2. Once the old unit is out you have a rare, free look at the framing, the subfloor and the plumbing. Nobody will see it again for decades. Spending an hour there is the cheapest insurance available on the whole project.
Time
Where the two days actually go.
Typical professional hours for a straight swap into an existing footprint with no drain relocation. Our own working figures, not an industry survey — treat them as planning numbers rather than a quote. A DIY install generally runs one and a half to two times these hours, which is normal and not a reflection on anybody.

Failure modes
Ten mistakes that generate callbacks.
Not theoretical. These are the things that come back to us as questions, complaints and warranty calls, roughly in order of how often we hear them.
The expensive five
- Latex caulk instead of 100% silicone. The most common single cause of a leaking joint. It shrinks and lets go, usually within two years, usually at the pan-to-wall joint where it does the most damage.
- Pan set out of level. Water ponds in the low corner forever. Unfixable without removing the walls. Check both directions and both diagonals, with weight in the pan.
- Drain forced into alignment. If the pan has to be shifted or the drain flexed to meet the waste, something is wrong. Forcing it stresses the connection and it will weep later. Dry-fit and mark before you commit.
- Side panels installed before the back panel. The overlap ends up shedding water behind the panel rather than into the pan. It looks fine for a year.
- Ordering to the widest measurement. Walls are not parallel. Measure at three heights and order to the smallest number.
The annoying five
- Valve hole cut too small. Cut slightly oversized. The escutcheon covers it, and a tight hole puts stress into the panel that shows up as a crack.
- Grab bars placed to a drawing. Place them to the person. Have them stand in the shower and reach. This is exactly what the reinforced backing is for.
- Over-tightened flange screws. Snug, not crushed. Over-driving dimples the flange and can craze the gelcoat.
- Using the shower before the silicone cures. Twenty-four hours. Using it early is how a perfectly executed seal fails.
- Not checking the delivery route. A single-piece unit that cannot turn the stairs is an expensive lesson. Measure the narrowest point on the whole path.

Low thresholds
What recessing a pan actually involves.
The lower the threshold, the more your floor has to accommodate it. This is the part that turns a predictable job into a variable one, so it is worth understanding before you commit to a height.

Recessing is not a DIY stage
Cutting a hole in a floor system and headering off between joists is structural work. It needs to be done correctly, it usually needs a permit, and on a slab it needs a saw most homeowners do not own. If the assessment above pointed you at a professional, this is usually why.
The honest alternative
If recessing is impractical, a 0.75″ threshold with a beveled edge delivers most of the same daily benefit in a private home. It is not an ADA roll-in threshold and we will not call it one, but it sits on the subfloor and needs no floor surgery. More detail on the barrier-free page.
Paperwork
Permits, inspections and when they apply.
Requirements vary by city and county, and the only authoritative answer comes from your local building department. That said, the pattern is consistent enough to plan around.
- Usually no permit: a like-for-like replacement in the same footprint that does not move plumbing, alter framing or change the electrical.
- Usually a permit: relocating a drain or supply lines, recessing a pan, cutting or altering framing, changing the footprint, or any work in a commercial building.
- Always confirm: condominiums and HOAs frequently have their own rules on top of the municipal ones, particularly about work above another unit.
- Rough-in inspection: where a permit is required, the inspector generally wants to see the plumbing before the walls close up. Do not hang panels until that is signed off.

What installation costs on top of the kit.
Regional labour rates vary enormously, so treat these as bands rather than prices. They are the ranges we hear back from customers and installing contractors around the country.

How long does it take to install a walk-in shower kit?
A straight swap into an existing footprint with no drain relocation is a two-day job for a professional: roughly 12 to 25 working hours depending on how heavy the demolition is and what the rough-in needs. A careful DIYer should plan on one and a half to two times that, so a long weekend. On top of the working hours, allow 24 hours for the silicone to cure before anyone uses the shower.
Can I install a shower kit myself?
Many people do. The demolition, setting the pan, hanging the wall panels, fitting the trim and sealing are all within reach of a competent DIYer who owns a 4 foot level and reads the instructions. Where most people should stop is relocating a drain, altering framing, or recessing a pan into the floor to achieve a half inch threshold. Those are licensed trade jobs in most jurisdictions and structural work in all of them.
Do your shower pans need a mortar bed?
No. Our pans arrive pre-leveled and self-sustaining, so no mud setting is required at any threshold height. That removes roughly a day of labour and eliminates the single most common cause of a shower pan failing years later. The trade-off is that the subfloor underneath has to be flat, sound and dry, because there is no mortar to make up the difference.
What is the minimum size a shower can legally be?
It depends which model plumbing code your jurisdiction adopted. Under the International Plumbing Code and the IRC, a shower compartment must have at least 900 square inches of interior area and a least dimension of 30 inches, with an exception allowing 25 inches if the compartment has at least 1,300 square inches. Under the Uniform Plumbing Code it must have at least 1,024 square inches and be able to encompass a 30 inch circle, with no equivalent exception. Both measure the finished interior at threshold height, not the outside of the kit.
What size drain does a shower need?
A shower drain is 2 inches minimum, properly trapped and vented. If you are converting a bathtub, check the existing line: tub waste is sometimes smaller and always sits at one end rather than the centre, which is the most common surprise in a tub-to-shower conversion.
What caulk should I use on a shower kit?
100% silicone, everywhere water can reach. Not latex, not siliconised acrylic, not a general purpose tub-and-tile caulk unless the tube specifically says 100% silicone. Latex and acrylic caulks shrink, lose adhesion on gelcoat and support mould growth, and they are behind a large share of joints that start leaking within two years. Colour-match it to the pan and run one continuous bead rather than three touch-ups.
How level does the shower pan need to be?
Level in both directions, checked with a 4 foot level along the front edge, along the back edge and across both diagonals, and checked again with weight in the pan. An eighth of an inch out across five feet will pond water in one corner for the life of the shower, and it cannot be corrected afterwards without removing the wall panels. This is the stage to slow down on.
Will a shower kit fit through my bathroom door?

Do I need blocking in the walls for grab bars?
Not with our panels. Full reinforced backing runs throughout the wall system, so grab bars mount at the height and position that suits the person rather than wherever a stud lands, and they can be repositioned later. If you are fitting a different panel system, add solid blocking between studs anywhere a grab bar or seat will land, because retrofitting it means opening the wall again.
What water temperature should the valve be set to?
Under the ADA, an accessible shower spray unit must deliver water at 120 degrees Fahrenheit maximum, which in practice means a thermostatic or pressure-balancing valve rather than a plain mixer. Even outside a code-driven project it is worth doing, because scald protection matters most for exactly the people a walk-in shower is usually bought for. It is cheap at rough-in and expensive to retrofit.
